5 Things We Know About the Nintendo NX

So many rumors have come out about the Nintendo NX that it is so hard to keep track of it all! A few months ago, I wrote a piece warning everyone to keep their guard on and not be so gullible to every NX rumor. With all the rumors that have come out, here are 5 things that seem to be all but confirmed through various sources about the Nintendo NX.

5. NX Will be a Hybrid Mobile Console.

Almost all of the rumors and reports suggest that the Nintendo NX will be a home console/mobile hybrid of some sort. The thought is this: when at home, you plug the console into a base station that allows you to play Nintendo games on your TV. When on the go, you remove the console from the base station and play games on the go. It makes a lot of sense for Nintendo to do this because it eliminates competition with Sony and Microsoft as the Vita is relatively unpopular and Microsoft does not have a handheld gaming device.

4. Graphics on NX won’t be on PS4/Xbox One level.

Sadly, the NX probably won’t be on the level of current Sony and Microsoft consoles. But this is ok, as long as the console is indeed a handheld hybrid as mentioned above. Various reports have come out from credible gaming sites claiming this but perhaps the best evidence of this is when Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo of America said “For us, it’s not about specs, it’s not about teraflops, it’s not about the horsepower of a particular system. For us, it’s about the content.” Now the NX is rumored to be powered by the Nvidia Tegra mobile processor, which also powers the Nvidia Shield.

3. NX Will Use Cartridges.

There are a list of patents that make this seem all but inevitable. First, a patent was filed by Nintendo for a console with no optical-drive. Which makes sense especially if the NX is a mobile console. Another notable patent filed by Nintendo was for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which lists “video game cartridges” as a medium for the game.

2. Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Just Dance 2017, Dragon Quest X, and Project Sonic 2017 all coming to the NX.

These four games are the only ones officially confirmed by their respective developers. Nintendo confirmed Breath of the Wild last year during a Nintendo Direct, Ubisoft confirmed Just Dance 2017 at their E3 2016 briefing, Project Sonic 2017 was confirmed for the NX at the Sonic 25th anniversary event. Square Enix confirmed Dragon Quest X to come to the NX in Japan (at least for now). Hopefully between now and the release of the NX, many more games are announced to come on the console.

1. Nintendo NX scheduled to release in March 2017

For now, we know for sure that the NX is coming next March. I say for now because Nintendo could push this date back if they felt the console wouldn’t be ready to be released. This info was released at a Nintendo shareholder’s meeting in Japan earlier this year.
