Two additional titles in the Kirby series are now available on the Wii U’s Virtual Console: Kirby’s Epic Yarn for the Wii and Kirby Mass Attack for the Nintendo DS. The games will come at a price of $19.99 and $9.99, respectively.
Kirby’s Epic Yarn launched for the Wii in 2010 in the midst of Nintendo’s push the bring back 2D console sidescrollers. The game featured a yarn aesthetic (later utilized to a fuller extent in Yoshi’s Woolly World) that involved the titular Kirby untangling knots, opening zippers, and even adding yarn to create larger machines and structures. While Kirby’s Epic Yarn didn’t master the crafting style of Yoshi‘s lone Wii U release, it provided some of the better platforming mechanics on the console and served as the most creative and original Kirby game in years.
Kirby Mass Attack rolled out for the Nintendo DS in 2011, serving as one of the final major releases for the handheld around the time that the 3DS came out. Unlike the majority of games in its series, Mass Attack was controlled entirely through the touch screen and stylus, as the player would use touch functionality to control the multiple Kirbies to solve puzzles and attack enemies. The title was generally well received by critics, garnering an 83/100 rating on Metacritic.
