Original Legend of Zelda highlights Video Game Hall of Fame inductees

NES classic The Legend of Zelda has been inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in Rochester, NY, according to an official statement from the organization. The game, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this very year, is often considered one of the greatest titles of its generation and one of the most influential games of all time, having set the precedent for open world and dungeon-crawling gameplay. The series has spawned nearly 20 total entries since the original The Legend of Zelda, and the series isn’t even close to done.

The classic NES title is among six inductees this year, the remainder of which consisted of Grand Theft Auto IIIThe Oregon TrailThe Sims, Sonic The Hedgehog, and Space InvadersDoomPac-ManPongSuper Mario Bros.Tetris, and World of Warcraft were last year’s inductees.

Given its immense popularity and legacy, it’s honestly a surprise that The Legend of Zelda wasn’t among the Hall’s very first inductees. In fact, several other games in the series (Ocarina of TimeA Link to the PastMajora’s MaskWind Waker) are also highly regarded as some of the best and most influential games of their time, so it wouldn’t be too surprising of any of those made the Hall of Fame in due time. Still, Nintendo’s classic franchise has officially gotten its props, just in time for fans of the series to salivate even further at the prospect of a new game in the series, which is set to launch promptly in 2086 (just kidding, but really, it’s been too long).
