Talk about a terrible week of movies. This week we have 3 movies premiering that will probably fall in the range of mediocre to terrible. I guess this is to be expected since we’ve had some good movies come out the last couple weeks (Bridge of Spies and The Martian). Even Goosebumps is getting decent reviews! I probably still won’t watch it in theaters though.
Here’s a quick rundown of the movies you shouldn’t watch and some recommendations on what you should watch:
Jem and the Holograms
This adaptation of a 1980’s cartoon seems to just be a couple decades too late. IGN calls this movie many things including an “inspirational story”, and a “positive way musicians can affect their audiences” but they do not call it a Jem and the Holograms movie, criticizing that it is a poor adaptation of the animated series. The movie lacks in star power and tries to hard to adapt a 1980’s cartoon to present day life. I would probably just wait till it comes out on Redbox. Rock the Kasbah
Unlike Jem and the Holograms, this movie features a packed cast including Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Zooey Deschanel, Kate Hudson, among others. It seems that this movie is just terrible. It’s that simple. It has been called “Bill Murray’s worst movie ever” and a “terrible showcase for ugly American stereotypes.” It’s clear that it’s a waste of money. The Last Witch Hunter
This was a surprise for me because I kind of thought this movie would be decent. The Lions Gate Entertainment movie stars Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood, and Michael Caine. Most of the reviews for this film pretty much say this is nothing special and Rotten Tomatoes currently has it at 15%.
Watch if you can find it:
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension
The final film in the Paranormal Activity series seems to be pretty good but has a limited release due to some of the major theaters boycotting the film. Theaters are boycotting the film because the movie will be available through video on demand services only 17 days after it is finished airing in theaters. This is definitely a bold move on the Paranormal Activity team and I’m not really sure if it will work out in their favor or not. Either way, if you can find it, it may not be a terrible movie. Watch one of these movies instead: Steve Jobs, The Martian, or Bridge of Spies
I know these movies have already been released, but I would still recommend watching these over any of the above films.
