First and foremost, I found Straight Outta Compton to be so entertaining. I personally am not a huge fan of rap music and really didn’t know much about some of the prominent members of Gangsta Rap such as Ice Cube,Tupac, Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, or Eazy E. It’s not that I have anything against the genre, I just didn’t grow up listening to that music. However, I thought this story was so good! Seeing how the various members of NWA were treated was powerful and it was very interesting to see how the events that transpired caused them to write the music that they did.
The film is done very well. It is well directed and the acting was done well. F. Gary Gray did an amazing job with putting all the various parts of the film together. The sets were well designed to the time period and the writing and dialogue were well written. The shot selection and cinematography was great too. What surprised me the most was the acting. O’Shea Jackson did a great job playing his father, Ice Cube. Of course he had the advantage of seeing his father his whole life and looking like him, but he seriously did well playing the part in general. The other actor I really enjoyed was Corey Hawkins, who played Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre was probably the coolest of all the guys in NWA. He wasn’t perfect but I found myself rooting for him more than anyone else.
One of the major themes of the film dealt with the freedom of speech and standing up for what you believe in. While I may not have agreed with how the members of the NWA presented their message, it is apparent that there was a problem with the way law enforcement treated African-Americans. The apparent racism and wrong-doings on the part of the police was enough for the NWA to stand up despite being threatened multiple times by various law enforcement agencies trying to shut them up. I really admired their boldness in speaking the truth and not wanting to be politically correct despite the apparent consequences they would receive for their at the time, controversial message. Secondly, I found another major theme of the film to be was loyalty. The various members of NWA had this very strong bond as if it was them against the world. Eazy E says in the film that they all will be brothers forever. Even while at times things were rough, they found a way to get back together, as siblings commonly do.
Overall, Straight Outta Compton is a great film with powerful themes that most people can relate to in some way. The 200.5 million dollar box office is totally justifiable. I highly recommend this movie if you enjoy the music industry and like learning about American history.
