Super Smash Bros Character Snubs – Shovel Knight

One of the most popular indie games of the last few years, Shovel Knight was one that many people thought would for sure join the cast in Smash. Since Yacht Club Games initially released Shovel Knight on June 26, 2014, the game has taken off. It is available on all the major consoles and handhelds, on Windows, Mac, Linux, and even the Amazon Fire TV. The platformer feels very much like a Nintendo game as players go through various levels dealing with different elements. At the end of each level, players fight a different boss much like Nintendo games. Unlike Nintendo games though, this game is VERY challenging, but so much fun.

Here’s my argument as to why Shovel Knight should have been included in Smash. First, many people thought for sure that Shovel Knight would be included in Smash when it was announced that an Amiibo would come out for Wii U and 3DS owners of the game to use. Secondly, the game was first released on the Wii U and 3DS. This gave Nintendo some exclusivity on the game and character. Thirdly, the Shovel Knight game is very retro feeling, with the graphics being very similar to older Nintendo consoles and the feel of the game is somewhat between a cross of both Mario and Metroid games. Fourthly, Shovel Knight is such an original character, using a shovel as his primary weapon. With a variety of different attacks using his shovel and even some other magic/potion based attacks it would have been very easy to create a moveset for Shovel Knight (here’s a discussion on what his moveset could have been). Finally, Shovel Knight has been extremely popular. The game has gotten high reviews from virtually all the companies that have reviewed it and the game sold over 700,000 copies as of June 30, 2015 with most likely a good amount of people buying the game since then. This is extremely successful for an indie game. It would have been really cool for Nintendo to include Shovel Knight as a gesture to both the fans of the game and a nod to the indie developer community. Shovel Knight would have been an amazing character to play as. I can only imagine getting some kills with that iconic shovel of his.
