Super Smash Bros Character Snubs – Wolf O’Donnell

Wolf O’Donnell or Wolf is a prominent character in the StarFox series. He is the leader of Star Wolf and also a rival to Fox. Wolf has already been in Super Smash Bros Brawl so I won’t spend time in this post writing about why he is a legitimate candidate to be in the game, since he’s already qualified. In fact, many people wanted Wolf to come back, as many of the characters from both Melee and Brawl have returned in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS. Instead, I will be arguing why I feel Wolf should have been included.

As I mentioned, we know that Wolf is a legitimate candidate since he was already included in Brawl. I personally hoped that Sakurai would bring back all the characters that had ever been in the game. It seemed like this would happen as Mewtwo, Lucas, and Roy were all added as DLC. Secondly, Wolf is a prominent character in a successful Nintendo franchise, but Starfox Zero, the newest game in the series for Wii U, is set to release in April 2016. Wouldn’t Wolf had been a great way to market the new Starfox game? Nintendo could have even done a special where if you pre-order Starfox Zero you get Wolf for free. That would encourage me a little more to get the game. We’ve seen companies and even Nintendo use Smash to promote games. The addition of Ryu (from Streetfighter) and Cloud (from Final Fantasy 7) are both perfect examples of characters that were probably added to the game for marketing purposes as both a Street Fighter and multiple Final Fantasy games are set to release in the next year. If Nintendo could add Corrin to market the new Fire Emblem game, why not do it for Starfox too? Not to mention that because Wolf was already in Brawl, Sakurai would not need to start from scratch for the moveset or look. Everything has already been created! Wolf could have been an easy $4 for Nintendo each time he is bought.

Oh well. Here’s Wolf’s intro video in Super Smash Bros Brawl. This little clip dwas Wolf’s introduction in the Subspace Emissary (story mode) of the game. Enjoy!
